A Historic Moment – With Roots in Sutton
The congregation of St Nicholas Church, Sutton, are filled with joy as we celebrate the election of Dame Sarah Mullally DBE as the 106th Archbishop of Canterbury.
Before breaking ground as Bishop of London and now the first woman ever to lead the Church of England, Sarah served here in Sutton as our Team Rector (2006–2012). Many in our congregation remember her warmth, vision, and dedication to parish life.
Her journey has been extraordinary – from becoming the youngest ever Chief Nursing Officer for England, to answering the call to ordained ministry, and now to being entrusted with leading the worldwide Anglican Communion.
For the first time in nearly 500 years, the Church of England is led by a woman. Today, as people of St Nicholas, we give thanks that our former Rector now carries this historic responsibility.
Please join us in praying for Archbishop-Designate Sarah as she prepares for this new chapter in service to Christ and His Church
